Uses for Thermography

There are many uses for thermography in an industrial environment. An experienced thermographer can offer experience, proficiency and safety. Thermography is a non contact form of investigation and requires no down time of service during its use. Companies looking to initiate a program where infrared thermography is used, the company may find an outside contractor, an in-house thermographer or consultant. The thermographer chosen to perform the inspections show be qualified. An unqualified thermographer is the greatest factor limiting a company from initiating a program. In order for the plan to be successful, the thermographer must have knowledge of the systems inspected and possess the appropriate thermal imaging equipment.

Uses for infrared thermography in the industrial are many for example:

  • Predictive maintenance
  • Preventive maintenance
  • Condition Monitoring
  • Forensic Investigation
  • Research and Development
  • Quality Assurance

Thermography may be applied to just about any condition where the knowledge of thermal patterns can provide data which is meaningful to that specific condition, system or component. The uses for thermography in common industrial applications are applied to electrical distribution systems seeking out loose or damaged connections, imbalanced loads or overloading.  With mechanical systems you may find issues with misalignment, excessive friction or belt tensions.  With structural issues pertaining to the buildings envelope we’ll find moisture intrusion, energy loss, missing insulation and voids within masonry wall units. Flat roof inspections are critical in locating moisture trapped within the roofs insulation membrane.
